Making Waves with Intention

Sailing experiences in Midcoast Maine & Beyond on Sailing Vessel Rune, a classic 1968 Alberg 30

Casco Bay

What to expect sailing Casco Bay (Click)

Departing from the Sebasco Harbor Resort, we start our adventure by sailing directly into the Eastern portion of Casco Bay.  We imediately recognize the quintessential characterstics of the Maine coast as we cruise past some of Casco Bay's 136 islands.  Tall evergreens stand along granite ledge partially covered with seasweed.  Seals sunbath on the exposed half-tide ledge.  Lobster buoys of all colors bob in the waves as we silently glide through it all.

We make our way further out into the bay, the ocean swells roll beneath us, the summer breaze caresses, and as the day rolls on we are treated to one picture perfect postcard moment after another. The stunning natural beauty of this place, combined with the dynamic seascape, and hidden anchorages make Casco Bay a location that sailors from around the world dream of experiencing.

Sailing Vessel Rune

Rune is a 1968 Alberg 30, built by Whitby Boatworks in Ontario, Canada.  The Alberg 30 is the longest running production sailboat model in the history of boatbuilding, with over 700 boats built during the 25 years of production.  Being an early fiberglass model, her solid fiberglass hull is very thick.  She has the look of a classic wooden boat from the 1940's or 50's, with graceful long overhang at the bow and stern and a narrow beam.

Her full keel and rugged construction make her extremely seaworthy, so much so that the Alberg 30 has many circumnavigations to her credit.  I purchased Rune in the fall of 2020.  She had been on the hard (out of the water) for almost 10 years.  It has taken a lot of work to get her ship shape again, and the work is ongoing, but it is a labor of love.

Your Captain

Shawn has sailing in his blood.  His paternal line are all sailors at least as far back as his Great, Great Grandfather.  He captained the only five-masted schooner built in Belfast, Maine, the Jennie Flood Kreger (Pictured above).

As a young boy Shawn spent summers on Craig Pond in Orland.  His father taught him to sail around age 10, and he spent many of his summer days riding the wind and waves in a small cat rig.  He eventually found his way home to sailing on the ocean, and he's spent the last ten years exploring the waters of Penobscot, Muscongus, and Casco Bays.

Shawn holds a US Coast Guard OUPV license and a 25 ton Masters with both sailing and towing endorsements.  He is uniquely qualified as a captain and coach due to the extensive training, which goes well beyond the necessary sailing skills and knowledge.  He has many years of coursework and experience in teambuilding, conflict resolution, bully prevention, personal growth, and leadership development.
